You know what really gets to me, and I’m sure many know this, is the blatant abuse and betrayal that white photogs display in POC countries. Every time a photo has gotten famous like this photo did in history, the actual focus of the photo is left behind in the dust while the white photog is hailed as a hero for displaying the ills of that country. He didn’t even fucking ask her name. He didn’t ask for 17 years. The world knew nothing about her life and her story. He captured one moment that made him famous and she got nothing.
Every time I see this photo, I seethe.

interesting perspective

whats her name though

^^^

HER NAME IS SHARBAT GULA

HER NAME IS SHARBAT GULA

Reblogging this version with her NAME, Sharbat Gula.

Ignore this dumb shit up top.
Funny, it’s almost like National Geographic didn’t actively search to find her name and didn’t do a followup issue with portraits of her later years.  And like the article didn’t actually describe the situation of her country and her situation. Literally everything you’re complaining about was in that article or in the followup article. Know how I know? Cause I fucking read it!! If you didn’t know her name after 2002, it’s because you WEREN’T PAYING ATTENTION or it was not sourced properly. Not exactly a “white photog” only problem.
It’s great when people get upset about shit they didn’t research. Just because YOU don’t know her name, doesn’t mean THREE SECONDS of research blocks everyone else from learning it.
